Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you may wish to know about Drawn from Cocoon®.
Every Drawn from Cocoon® piece begins as an original artwork before becoming a wearable creation. The information below provides answers to some of the questions most frequently asked about the studio, craftsmanship, silk, care, shipping, ordering, and authenticity.
1. What is Drawn from Cocoon®?
Drawn from Cocoon® is an artisanal studio based in Gqeberha, South Africa, creating one-of-a-kind hand-painted silk scarves and wraps.
Every piece is individually conceived, designed, and hand-painted by artist and founder Destiny Harris, transforming silk into an original work of wearable art.
2. How are the scarves and wraps made?
Every piece is individually hand-painted on 100% Mulberry silk and finished with a hand-rolled hem. Each scarf and wrap is created entirely by hand and represents an original work of wearable art.
3. What type of silk is used?
All Drawn from Cocoon® pieces are created on premium 100% Mulberry silk, carefully selected for its softness, drape, luminosity, and ability to beautifully showcase the artwork.
The silk is sourced from carefully selected suppliers, with its authenticity supported by supplier documentation and recognised independent testing where applicable. Only silk that meets the studio's quality standards is selected for use in creating Drawn from Cocoon® artworks.
4. What is a hand-rolled hem?
A hand-rolled hem is a traditional finishing technique in which the edge of the silk is carefully rolled and stitched by hand.
This refined detail enhances both the craftsmanship and durability of the finished piece.
5. Are the pieces limited editions or is every piece unique?
Every Drawn from Cocoon® scarf and wrap is considered an original artwork.
While a collection or theme may inspire multiple works, every hand-painted design remains an individual artistic expression. No two pieces are ever identical, making every Drawn from Cocoon® creation unique.
6. Where are the pieces created?
Every Drawn from Cocoon® artwork is designed and hand-painted in the studio in Gqeberha, South Africa.
7. How long does it take to create a piece?
The creative process typically takes several days, from conceptualisation and painting to steaming, finishing, and final inspection.
This slower approach allows every piece to be created with care, patience, and attention to detail.
8. How should a silk scarf or wrap be cared for?
To help preserve the artwork:
- Hand wash gently in cool water using a mild detergent suitable for silk.
- Do not bleach or soak for extended periods.
- Avoid wringing or twisting the silk.
- Dry flat or hang away from direct sunlight.
- Iron on a low silk setting while slightly damp, if required.
Professional dry cleaning is also suitable.
9. Will the colours fade?
When properly cared for, the colours are designed to remain vibrant.
As with all natural fibres and dyed textiles, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may gradually affect colour over time.
10. Do you offer gift wrapping?
Drawn from Cocoon® does not offer a separate gift-wrapping service.
However, every artwork is thoughtfully presented and packaged to create a memorable unboxing experience from the moment it is received.
11. What makes each piece wearable art?
Every Drawn from Cocoon® piece begins as an original artwork before becoming a wearable creation.
